p44 | Roland V-Piano Review

Web Clip 1: Shot at Summer NAMM 2009, this video compilation lets you in on the action as the V-Piano is revealed to the press. You also get to see some dynamite performances.

Web Clip 2: You can judge the V-Piano’s acoustic realism for yourself by listening to the onboard demo songs.

p50 | Steinberg Cubase 5.01 (Mac/Win) Review

Web Clip 1a: VariAudio at work. First, the unaltered audio file from a Cubase 5 demo.

Web Clip 1b: With Clip 1b, I have stretched and moved some of the notes in this rather melismatic passage, achieving pretty natural results.

Web Clip 1c: With Clip 1c, I have used VariAudio’s MIDI-generating capabilities to double the vocal with a monophonic synth lead, courtesy of Camel Audio’s Chameleon 5000 plug-in.

Web Clip 2: Here’s a grooving sound collage, courtesy of LoopMash.

p58 | Quick Pick: Korg microKORG XL

Web Clip 1: The microKORG XL is a fresh combination of features from the original microKORG and the Korg R3. This PDF chart shows how the three instruments compare.

Web Clip 2: With a Korg RADIAS–derived vocoder and R3-style mic, the microKORG XL can make some terrific sounds. Here’s a tour of several vocoder presets: Vocal Pulse, Vocal Ensemble, Spectral Voice, Voice Changer and Devil Vox.

Web Clip 3: Three knobs let you shape the microKORG XL’s sound during performance. In this clip, I changed FM and waveshaper parameters on an electric piano patch. (The background drums are a loop in Ableton Live to keep things moving.)

Web Clip 4: And in this clip I changed filter parameters on an arpeggiated sound, PHAZKIT.

p60 | Quick Pick: Applied Acoustics Systems Strum Electric GS-1 (Mac/Win)

Web Clip 1: With slightly different settings for individual string parameters, I’ve created a guitar with animated beating, tremolo effects and a vaguely sitar-like quality. None of Strum Electric’s built-in effects processing is active.

Web Clip 2: Here’s a rhythm guitar part that starts on the neck pickup, switches to the bridge and then blends both.
