MOTU has announced the UltraLite-mk3, a portable bus-powered FireWire audio interface with onboard effects and mixing.

UltraLite mk3

The UltraLite-mk3 features a rugged yet lightweight alloy chassis, 2 XLR/TRS combo-style microphone inputs with preamps, high-impedance guitar inputs, 10 inputs and 14 outputs total, 192 kHz analog I/O, a 32-bit floating point DSP for digital mixing and effects processing, front-panel LCD programming, FireWire connectivity, and standalone operation as a digital mixer and processor.

Its mixer allows you to apply no-latency effects processing to inputs, outputs, or busses directly within the UltraLite-mk3, all independently from the computer. You can also record input signals to the computer as wet, dry, or dry with a wet monitor mix; or, you can record or mix the UltraLite-mk3 reverb output separately in your DAW, using the separate "reverb return" stream. Additionally, you can apply effects when the UltraLite-mk3 is operating standalone as a complete standalone mixer.

The effects section include reverb, parametric EQ, and compression/limiting. Specifically, the UltraLite-mk3 offers Classic Reverb with 5 different room types, 3 frequency shelves with adjustable crossover points, shelf filtering, and reverb lengths up to 60 seconds; a standard compressor with conventional threshold/ratio/attack/release/gain controls, and the Leveler, which models the LA-2A optical compressor; 7-band parametric EQ with 4 filter styles; and LP and HP filters with slopes that range from 6 to 36 dB.

MOTU expects to ship the UltraLite-mk3 in the summer of 2008. For more information, please visit motu.com.
