FOCUSRITE LIQUID4PRE: This 4-channel mic preamp from Focusrite ($3,499.99) marries an analog front-end with dynamic convolution DSP, outputting the sounds of 40 vintage and classic preamps across all four channels. Digitally controlled and remotely controllable over Ethernet via dedicated Liquid4Control software, the unit offers 99 setup memory slots and total recall of every parameter. A Pro Tools TDM/RTAS plug-in allows integrated remote control via Pro Tools and Icon/Venue systems. A harmonic distortion circuit accounts for variance in the vintage originals, while Session Saver—an AGC circuit—intelligently reduces the input level to help avoid critical overs. Every channel has independent controls for highpass filter, phantom power and polarity reverse. AES and ADAT optical digital inputs/outputs are provided as is an optional EtherSound 8-channel card. NAMM Booth #6474.

FOCUSRITE ISA828: Designed to upgrade a DAW or studio's front-end, the ISA828 from Focusrite (www.focusrite.com; $2,999.99) has eight original ISA transformer-based preamps, boasting the same design as the original ISA110 module from Focusrite's Forte console-including the original Lundahl L1538 transformer and custom Zobel network. The two-rackspace unit also features eight line inputs, four instrument inputs and an optional 8-channel 192kHz A/D converter. I/O is on 25-pin D-Type connectors, for easy integration with Pro Tools HD, hard disk recorders and mixing desks. Also standard are variable impedance switches for the preamps along with insert switches and highpass filters on every channel. LED input channel meters with precise meter trim use the same reference points as Digi's HD system and provide clear and accurate input metering, independent of the DAW. NAMM Booth #6474.

MANLEY LABS MANLEY MASTERING INSERT SWITCHER: This unit for high-end mastering allows centralized, hard-wire bypass of up to eight outboard devices, such as analog EQs/compressors/limiters. It has pre/post-level trims in 1/2dB steps, sum/difference matrices, mixing/parallel-path insert or rotary fader, and more. The internal architecture is mostly passive relay switching, and any gain boosting is minimalist: exceptionally clean, quiet, high-current and rarely unbalanced. Left/right signal paths are generally on separate circuit boards to minimize crosstalk. Switches are large EAO push-buttons and Grayhill gold-contact rotaries. NAMM Booth #6280.

MOOG MUSIC MOOGERFOOGER-FREQBOX: The MF-107 FreqBox is a different effect: The effected sound is not a processed version of your input signal, but the sound of the input signal modulating an internal oscillator. It contains a VCO with continuously variable waveshape. The MF-107 modulates the internal oscillator as follows: hard synched to the input signal and frequency modulated (FM) by the input signal. The VCO frequency can be modulated by an envelope follower. NAMM Booth #6310.
