Audio-Technica has announced the AT4021 ($495) cardioid and AT4022 ($495) omnidirectional pencil condenser microphones. According to the manufacturer, these mics feature a new capsule design/construction and are ideal for studio and live applications and recording acoustic instruments; the omnidirectional AT4022 is appropriate for ensemble use, stereo recording, and group or background vocals.
Both the AT4021 and the AT4022 offer high SPL handling, a wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, and good reproduction of low-frequency sounds. The AT4021 has a cardioid polar pattern that reduces the pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, while the AT4022 has an omnidirectional polar pattern, providing maximum ambient pickup.
In addition, these mics feature an 80 Hz highpass filter for easy switching from a flat frequency response to a low-end roll-off. Output from both microphones' XLRM connectors is low-impedance balanced.
