Garritan has announced the World Instruments library (Mac/Win), a collection of expressive and exotic instruments from around the world.
The World Instruments Library offers a variety of sampled flutes, such as Native American flutes, bamboo flues, Irish flutes, Chinese and Japanese flutes, Indian flutes, clay flutes, pan flutes, and nose flutes. Also included is an array of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments, like Taiko drums, Gamelan ensemble, Log drums, tablas, ewe drums, balaphon, Udu drum, talking drum, steel drums, and Latin percussion. You will also get plucked and bowed strings, such as Indian Sitars, Japanese koto and shamisen, African kora, Middle Eastern oud and santoor, and erhu; as well as other instruments, like didgeridoo, Middle Eastern reed instruments, accordions, Tibetan bowls, and harmonium.
Using the library's controls for dynamics, vibrato, tongue/slur techniques, airflow, auto legato, auto-variability, auto-portamento, trills, and more, you can play the sampled instruments musically and expressively. The library supports wind controllers, such as the Akai EWI.
According to the manufacturer, a unique feature of the library is its support for Scala files to adjust to different temperaments and tunings. Garritan World Instruments supports Scala, a standard file format for musical tunings supporting hundreds of different scales. With Scala support, you can play an instrument in its authentic form.
Powered by the ARIA playback engine (developed by Plogue Technologies), the library works standalone or as a plug-in (in VST, AU, RTAS formats) and works with MakeMusic Finale 2009 and with other supported notation programs. The Garritan World Instruments library will be available in the first quarter of 2009 as a download and later on DVD. For more information, please visit garritan.com.
