MAKING TRACKS
Off the Beaten Path

Web Clip 1:
A guitar track recorded with the metronome click off and free rubato tempo that varies from approximately 70 to 76 bpm.

Web Clip 2:
A typical drum loop with a fixed tempo of 95 bpm.

Web Clip 3:
The final result. The original guitar track remains unchanged, but a custom tempo map has been created that follows all of its tempo variations. The sequence''s conductor track and metronome now match the guitar track, and the fixed drum loop has learned the tempo map and now follows along.

Frequency Shifting Tips for Drums

Web Clip 1:
Kick, snare, tom, ride cymbal, and open and closed hi-hats were individually frequency shifted with settings similar to those described in the article. The frequency shifting is initially bypassed, then activated for each part separately at four bar intervals.

Patches:
Hat_Seq: In this patch, the step sequencer and an ADSR envelope both modulate the frequency shifter's amount of shift. The ADSR envelope is triggered by a slightly delayed trigger from an envelope follower tracking the incoming audio.

Tom_Follow: In this patch, both a random LFO and ADSR envelope modulate the frequency shifter's amount of shift. The ADSR envelope is triggered by an envelope follower tracking the incoming audio.

Ride_LFO: In this patch, random and sine-wave LFOs modulate the frequency shifter's amount of shift. The modulation amount for the sine-wave LFO is controlled by an ADSR envelope triggered by an envelope follower.

Snare_Follow: In this patch, an ADSR envelope triggered by an envelope follower modulates the frequency shifter's amount of shift in the opposite direction of the initial shift.

Kick_LFO: In this patch, a random LFO modulates the frequency shifter's amount of shift.

SQUARE ONE
Just Passing Through

Web Clip 1:
In this example, a signal is first processed by a lowpass filter then by a highpass filter. All examples were created with the VirSyn Tera 2.0 modeled analog softsynth.

Web Clip 2:
Three sawtooth wave oscillators are detuned to provide a thicker sound. The unfiltered tone at the beginning crossfades into a tone filtered by a narrow bandpass filter.

Web Clip 3:
In this example, a synth sawtooth wave (a wave with lots of frequencies) is being processed by a lowpass filter. An envelope generator with a fast decay time is sweeping the filter cutoff frequency downward at the beginning of each note. The same patch is then processed with a slower envelope decay, which increases the length of the filter sweep.

The same patch as in Web Clip 3, but now with added filter resonance.

Web Clip 5:
A lowpass filter whose cutoff frequency is being modulated by a slow LFO.
