Metric Halo has announced its 2d Card upgrade for Mobile I/O FireWire audio interfaces. This 2d Card improves upon the Mobile I/O's processing, routing, and mixing engine. Each 2d Card comes with the company's "Character" processing engine, which adds 15 types of low-order distortion to the Mobile I/O's inputs and mix busses.

The 2d Card offers 5.5 times the available processing power of the original Metric Halo +DSP implementation, as well as a SIMD engine that provides an additional 2-times increase in power for select operations, such as mixing. It also adds better ADAT with support for optical SPDIF, which is independently switchable on both input and output, and asynchronous SRC for the optical SPDIF input.

Version 5 of the MIO Driver and MIO Console software (included with the 2d Card) provides direct access to the Mobile I/O and the 2d Processing Architecture. MIO Console Version 5 features a new customizable mixer and control for the mixing and processing resources of all connected Mobile I/O Expanded hardware.

A number of production plug-ins also come with the 2d Card, including MIOStrip (a channel strip with gate, compressor and 6-band EQ), HaloVerb, Mid-Side Decoder, Sample Delay, and Dither.

Owners of all Mobile I/O units can get the 2d Card upgrade. For 2882 and 2882+DSP units, the upgrade is $400 (user-install). For ULN-2 and ULN-2+DSP, the upgrade is $550 (including a new back-panel and ADAT I/O ports). The optional +DSP Bundle license can be added to all 2d Expanded units for $699.
