Berkleemusic Launches Film Scoring 101

Berkleemusic, the online extension of Berklee College of Music, has launched Film Scoring 101 and created the Mark "Devo" Mothersbaugh online scholarship. Film Scoring 101 will be introduced in the Spring 2006 Semester, which begins April 3. The interactive course, taught by Donald Wilkins, Chair of Berklee's Department of Film Scoring, guides online students through the process of creating original music to accompany a visual medium. Film Scoring 101 begins by focusing on the aesthetics, terminology, procedures, and technical aspects of film scoring. As the course progresses, students apply these skills towards scoring a short film. By using a broad range of techniques, including click tracks, spotting, scoring under dialogue, free timing, and the creative use of overlap cues, students learn how to develop a score and how to synchronize it seamlessly to visual events.

Concurrently, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, who has scored such feature films as Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, will have an online scholarship created in his name. Berkleemusic's scholarships provide gifted musicians throughout the world with unique opportunities to attend Berklee from anywhere, enabling them to receive world-class music instruction from renowned faculty members.
