Before year's end, Ableton will make available Live 7, several new add-on instruments, and Ableton Suite.

Live 7 (Mac/Win; $799 download, $999 boxed) offers plenty of new features, including an enhanced audio engine said to improve fidelity with 64-bit mix summing, POW-r dithering, and optimized sample-rate conversion; the Compressor device that integrates three compression models; new sidechain capability for Compressor, Gate, and Auto Filter; and added modes for Operator, Dynamic Tube, and Saturator, which provide anti-aliased processing and reduction of digital artifacts. The latest version of the software also offers an improved interface and 64-bit mode for EQ Eight; the new Spectrum analyzer that provides visual feedback for any audio signals within Live; and a reworked MIDI engine that minimizes jitter.

Ableton's new add-on instruments (pricing varies; see Web site for details) offer physical models of electric pianos, analog synthesizers, and string instruments as well as multi-mic/multilayer sampled acoustic drums, drum machines, orchestral strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion.

Ableton Suite ($119 download, $159 boxed) is a combination of Live 7 plus a selection of Ableton instruments, all in one package. The download version of Ableton Suite includes Live 7, Sampler, Operator, Electric, Analog, Tension, and Drum Machines. The boxed version of Ableton Suite additionally includes the Essential Instrument Collection 2 and Session Drums.
