Prism Sound Unveils the Orpheus

Introduced at Musikmesse 2007, the Orpheus is Prism Sound's new FireWire recording interface. The Orpheus offers eight analog recording channels, eight monitoring outputs, and S/PDIF and Toslink optical digital I/O ports. Its optical ports can also be used for ADAT, giving the Orpheus a maximum of 18 input and output channels.

The unit also features four digitally-controlled microphone amplifiers, two instrument inputs, monitoring and output level control, dual headphone outputs with separate volume control, and a built-in digital mixer.

According to the manufacturer, it is possible to configure outputs as monitoring for 5.1 or 7.1 surround mix projects by routing workstation outputs direct to the Orpheus outputs, controlled with the front-panel rotary encoder. You can also set up a stereo monitoring configuration in combination with foldback on other output channels.

The Orpheus has ASIO and WDM drivers for Windows XP or Vista, and for Mac OSX 10.4 or later, the unit interfaces directly to Core Audio. For both Mac and PC platforms, the Orpheus has a controller application to configure the unit and control its built-in mixer and other functions.
