M-Audio has announced ProjectMix I/O (Mac/Win; $1,249.95), which combines a motorized control surface and a multi-channel FireWire audio interface for use with Pro Tools LE and M--Powered, as well as software that supports the Mackie Control, Logic Control, or HUI protocols.
Each of the eight channel strips and master strip on the ProjectMix I/O feature a touch-sensitive moving fader with 10-bit resolution. Each channel strip includes buttons for record enable, mute, solo, select, and a rotary encoder that is assigned by one of 15 dedicated buttons (EQ, aux send, etc). The encoders can be used to control assigned plug-in parameters. The channel strips can map to all if the channels in a project by pressing the bank +/- and channel +/- controls.
There are illuminated controls for record, play, stop, fast forward, and rewind; a jog/scrub wheel and locate buttons for navigation; and keys for looping, zoom, region nudge, and setting in/out points. The I/O includes eight analog input channels with individual mic/line switches and 1/4-inch TRS balanced and XLR inputs. A single button is used to provide phantom power for all eight inputs. Input 1 offers a front-panel instrument input for guitar or bass. Other I/O includes ADAT Lightpipe, S/PDIF, MIDI, and word clock.
The ProjectMix I/O monitoring options include two 1/4-inch headphone outputs with separate volume controls, and two stereo output pairs. An A/B headphone source-monitoring switch for DJ-style cueing is included.
The ProjectMix I/O ships with M-Audio ProjectMix Control software (Mac/Win), which lets you assign MIDI commands to the faders, encoders, and buttons for controlling external sound modules, effects processors, or virtual instruments. This MIDI mode, which is separate from the DAW control mode, can be accessed at the press of a button, according to M-Audio. The ProjectMix I/O supports WDM, ASIO 2, Core Audio, and GSIF 2.
