Korg has unveiled the D4 Digital Recorder ($399), which lets you record four tracks of MPEG-1-format (audio layer 2) audio onto Compact Flash cards. Each channel supports eight virtual tracks, for a total of 32 tracks. The D4 features "turn/push" editing knobs, a backlit LCD, a front panel XLR input, and 1/4-inputs.

Three recording modes—High-Quality, Standard, and Economy—provide extended recording time options: you can get 99 songs per card, and up to 72 hours of recording time in Economy mode with a 2 GB card. The D4 also has a full suite of non-destructive editing tools including Punch-In/Out, Bounce, Copy/Paste, Delete, and Time Compression/Expansion.

The D4 offers 93 types of modeling effects featuring Korg's proprietary REMS technology. Included are 100 factory programs, with 100 user programs available.

The D4 comes with 87 PCM rhythm patterns (32 metronome and 55 rhythm patterns) including 8-beat, 16-beat, rock, funk, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, and 7/4.

Additional features include a built-in mic, a tuner, three selectable audio inputs (guitar, mic, and line), two audio outputs, a stereo headphone jack, and a USB serial port. The D4 comes with a 64 MB Compact Flash card (the unit supports cards up to 2 GB) and an AC adapter. For more information, visit Korg.com.
