Free Screening of The Unusual Suspects

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Remix magazine’s Remix Hotel Chicago, presents a free screening of the 2004 documentary The Unusual Suspects—Once Upon a Time in House Music (DVD, 90 min.) plus a DJ set by the film’s director and co-producer, Chip E., on Friday, August 19 at Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St. The film begins at 7 p.m. in the Claudia Cassidy Theater and will be followed by a Q&A with Erin Hutton, managing editor of Remix magazine. Chip E. will play an hour DJ set around 9 p.m. in the GAR Hall. Admission is free, and seating is based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Through a series of interviews with nightclub owners, patrons, and DJs, The Unusual Suspects recounts the history and origins of the genre of dance music known as House. The documentary takes a comprehensive look beginning with disco, to legendary nightclubs such as the Warehouse and The Loft. Lifestyles and the general culture of House fans are also explored. Featured interviewees include Jesse Saunders, Robert Owens, Joe Smooth, Frankie Knuckles, Julius “The Mad Thinker,” Steve “Silk” Hurley, Loleatta Holloway, Larry Heard (aka Mr. Fingers), Carl Bias (Master C&J), Jere McCallister, and many more.

The evening is presented as part of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ ohm performance series, which incorporates new media in the arenas of theater, music, and visual art. For more information, visit ChicagoCulturalCenter.org.
