Cakewalk is shipping Project5 version 2 (Win; $429), which includes a number of interesting new features: the Dimension synth/sampler (engineered by rgc:audio), the PSYN II subtractive synthesizer, GrooveMatrix pattern triggering, the Alias Factor bit decimator and resonant filter, support for multitrack audio recording and editing, Device Chain Presets (for recalling mix, synth, and effects chain settings), and the ability to act as a ReWire master or slave. Other features include a streamlined interface, automatable effects, track freeze, tap tempo, a track inspector view, multi-lane tracks, and track automation. Dimension offers four voices of stereo samples, wave guide synthesis, and subtractive synthesis. It comes bundled with over 3 GB of content, including acoustic and electronic instruments, loops, sound effects, and soundscapes.
GrooveMatrix lets you trigger individual MIDI patterns or audio loops, or groups of patterns and loops, in real time. You can control the synth with MIDI and populate the matrix cells with audio clips and MIDI patterns, without disrupting the audio engine.
Project5 version 2 also includes Dynamic Arpeggiator, a performance-oriented, per-track arpeggiator that come with hundreds of patterns and algorithms. The program supports VST and DirectX instruments and effects, as well as several file formats: WAV, Acid WAV, AIFF, Akai S5000/6000, LM4, Kurzweil, Ogg Vorbis, Sound Fonts 2, and SFZ.
